The Apple Watch Series 2 is now official, and it's packing in a lot of features aimed at fitness and outdoor enthusiasts, particularly how it's swim-proof. More than that, it's also geared toward mobile gamers, as it can run one of the most popular games of all time Pokémon GO.
To start things off, there are numerous improvements across the board compared with the first Apple Watch, including a speedier dual-core chip, a brighter screen and better graphics. On top of that, it also has GPS to track both distance and speed for running, biking and other physical activities.
Arguably the best part out of the bunch is its water resistance, allowing it to survive up to 164 feet under water. That's just the beginning too, as it offers new swim modes to boot, giving swimmers an Apple-branded fitness wearable that can track their performance in the pool.
"Built-in GPS. Water resistance to 50 meters. A new lightning-fast dual-core processor. And a display that's two times brighter than before. Full of features that help you stay active, motivated, and connected, Apple Watch Series 2 is designed for all the ways you move," Apple says.
Design-wise, it doesn't really stray from its predecessor, and that might come across as bad news for many fans. At any rate, the upgrades in terms of performance and features are plenty, and that's sort of a consolation prize if nothing else.
However, the Cupertino brand has yet to say whether or not the battery life has increased, and it didn't include cellular capability in the mix. To make the most out of it, users still need to have an iPhone at hand, but don't go swimming with the smartphone unless it's the iPhone 7.
Nevertheless, it's hitting the shelves with the latest watchOS 3, and on that note, previous Apple Watch models will also get the anticipated update on Sept. 13.
The highlight of the wearable tech for some is how it has support for Pokémon GO, allowing gamers to easily stay on top of their journey via their wrists. With that said, the Apple Watch Series 2 is yet another option to choose from other than the Pokémon GO Plus device, and it might just help with the declining number of users.
As for the price, the Apple Watch Series 2 is going to start out at $369, and it's available in aluminum and stainless steel that measures at 38 mm or 42 mm. The options don't end there either, as there's a new ceramic model in the lineup, and it's touted to be four times more durable than stainless steel. It's expected to roll out on Sept. 16, with preorders going up on Sept. 9.
What's more, Apple and Nike also banded together to bring an Apple Watch Nike+ edition to the roster, and as expected, it's targeted at runners. This special variant is going to launch sometime in October.
