Picking a good external hard drive is tough, especially with the many brands and varieties in the market right now.
Usually, buyers, especially those who are not as tech savvy as most, look for a drive that has a humongous storage space that processes data fast at the same time. However, most of the time, it is difficult to find solid-state drives (SSDs) that balance these two features. Samsung silently offered its massive 4 TB 850 EVO SSD, which comes with such features.
Positioned as a premium consumer SSD option by the South Korea-based firm, the 850 EVO 4 TB (and all the other drives in the 850 EVO series) is equipped with Samsung's Triple Layer Cell NAND memory-chip technology and V-NAND technology. These engineering innovations make use of 3D cell-stacking so that more files can fit even into a small storage space, reports PC Mag. It is also built with a SATA 6 GB/s Interface, which is compatible with the SATA 3 GB/s and SATA 1.5 GB/s interfaces.
Unlike other drive warranties that only have the first two to four years covered, the Samsung 850 EVO 4 TB will come with a five-year warranty, making it even sweeter.
A report from Engadget says that, while it is not the fastest drive option in the tech market today, having a Samsung 850 EVO is much better than buying another drive just to have more space.
Samsung also says that, like previous versions in the series, the 850 EVO 4 TB has a read speed of 540 MB per second. It also has an endurance rating (the amount of data the drive can handle before it becomes unreliable) of 300 TBW. It also boasts a sequential write speed of up to 520 MB per second.
The new SSD is also crammed with Samsung's TurboWrite and has a Rapid mode "to further boost performance for up to 2x faster data processing speeds [as compared to the same drive without Rapid enabled] by utilizing unused PC memory as cache storage."
"Samsung's 850 EVO series SSD is the industry's #1 best-selling SSD and is perfect for everyday computing," says the EVO product page on the company's official site. "Powered by Samsung's V-NAND technology, the 850 EVO transforms the everyday computing experience with optimized performance and endurance. Designed to fit desktop PCs, laptops, and ultrabooks, the 850 EVO comes in a wide range of capacities and form factors."
Samsung has 120 GB, 250 GB, 500 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB versions of the 850 EVO series.
If you are interested in snagging a 4 TB 850 EVO SSD, the item is now up for preorder via Samsung's site. You have to to fork out $1,499.99 for the item, though. The smallest version, the 120 GB model, in the meantime, can be purchased for about $70 via Amazon.
The 4 TB variant will be available on Amazon beginning July 31.
Samsung also unwrapped its 16 TB SSD, named PM1633a, late last year.
