PlayStation 4-playing Neverwinter fans, the wait is over! It may have taken the game three years to come to the console but it's finally here, with a release date set for July 19.
Neverwinter is a free-to-play MMORPG based on Dungeons & Dragons. A PS4 version of the game was announced in early June, featuring all existing content the base game contains, which includes nine expansions and eight playable classes translating to hundreds of quests to be played. Back when it was announced, the game did not have a release date.
The game is free-to-play so PS4 users will not need PlayStation Plus to jump in on the action in the realm.
As it is based on Dungeons & Dragons, Neverwinter will be home to foes like Valindra, Orcus, Demogorgon, Tiamat and others from the lore. The game will also feature iconic locations like the Underdark and Icewind Dale while giving players the chance to team up with characters straight out of R.A. Salvatore's novels, such as Drizzt Do'Urden.
Neverwinter takes place after the last Lord of Neverwinter disappeared. The city was plunged into chaos after that, what with remaining citizens forming factions and struggling for power against each other and the dead rising and trying to claim the city for themselves.
Those who can't wait for the big day can take advantage of the Neverwinter Head Start pack, which will be available on July 12, a week before the scheduled release date, for about $22. Aside from offering early access, the pack will also come with additional in-game items like a 20-pack set of enchanted keys, an Onyx weapon pack and a special Onyx Horse mount.
"We're extremely excited to welcome you all to the realms," said Alex Monney, communications manager for Perfect World Entertainment, the game's publisher.
After Neverwinter launches, it will continue to grow via upcoming expansions and in-game events. A 10th expansion pack called the Storm King's Thunder is set to come out later in the year to let players investigate the truth behind the Giants' sudden return to the Forgotten Realms.
Neverwinter for PC came out in 2013. It received mostly good reviews at the time and hopefully the great experience PC players had with the game will be enjoyed by those on the PS4 as well.
