Low-Cost Samsung Galaxy On5 Reportedly Hitting US Later This Month, On MetroPCS

T-Mobile prepaid subsidiary MetroPCS is apparently gearing up to launch the Samsung Galaxy On5 in the United States, according to a newly leaked pricing grid.

Samsung released its budget-friendly Galaxy On5 and Galaxy On7 in China back in October 2015, but the handsets never reached markets outside of Asia. MetroPCS, however, seems to think that the U.S. could use another affordable Galaxy smartphone and wants to offer the Galaxy On5 starting later this month.

PocketNow obtained a confidential MetroPCS "pricing grid" for the second quarter of this year and says it comes from a trusted source. Based on these leaked scheme, the prepaid carrier plans to add the Galaxy On5 to its lineup on June 27, at a dirt-cheap price of $60.

Despite the low price, however, the Galaxy On5 is still a capable handset that should offer a more-than-decent performance on a budget. The smartphone features a 5-inch HD display with a resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels and packs an Exynos 3475 quad-core processor under the hood, paired with Mali-T720 graphics and 1.5 GHz of RAM.

This combo may not deliver a stellar performance or handle intensive applications, but it should nonetheless be able to handle regular tasks and apps.

Other specifications include an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 5-megapixel selfie cam, 3G / 4G LTE cellular connectivity and a 2,600 mAh battery to keep everything up and running. The handset should last for up to 15 hours of 3G talk time and up to 49 hours of music play.

The Samsung Galaxy On5 will reportedly join MetroPCS' portfolio alongside the LG Stylo 2, which launched in Taiwan as the LG Stylus 2 Plus. The LG handset will launch on the same June 27 date as the Galaxy On5 but at a higher price of $150. According to PocketNow, the two will replace the LG G Stylo and the Galaxy S6, respectively.

Having the modestly specced Galaxy On5 replace the former Galaxy S6 flagship sounds quite odd to say the least, but the MetroPCS Galaxy S6 did reach its end of life a few weeks ago. Other devices that will reportedly leave the carrier's lineup soon include the Galaxy Grand Prime, the ZTE Obsidian and the Kyocera Hydro Wave.

MetroPCS has yet to offer any official comment or statement regarding its future device plans, however, so it's best to take this report with a grain of salt for now. As always, we'll keep you posted on any new developments.
