The new Knockout Physics System in UFC 2 is made so gamers can feel every punch and kick in mixed martial arts (MMA) on an amplified level.
That especially bodes true for the game's Knockout mode. To perfect the feature of UFC 2, EA Sports has tabbed one of the most legendary MMA fighters of all time for an interactive tutorial — none other than the hard-hitting Bas Rutten.
From the onset of the video and his opening statement alone, we feel that EA chose the best possible person to give this tutorial.
"Maybe one of your buddies beat you in Madden or in FIFA," Rutten says, laughing off such an event. "Whatever!" The MMA legend and former UFC heavyweight champion raises his fists before exclaiming: "Let's play Knockout mode — no grappling, no submissions, no takedowns."
From there, Rutten breaks the raw simplicity of the upcoming game's highlighted mode, revealing how it only includes four buttons — square for a left-handed punch, triangle for a right-handed punch, X for a left kick and circle for a right kick. Simple as that.
Rutten proceeds to run through every strike the mode enables gamers to use at their disposal, ranging from straight punches, hooks, uppercuts, body shots and kicks galore, including those to the legs, body and head. He also reveals combinations that gamers can utilize, as well as defensive tactics and counter attacks of which they should be aware.
Rutten's favorite part of this interactive tutorial? The knockout itself, of course. Rutten rattles off different ways to finish off your opponent in KO mode, ranging from a jarring overhand right, which your opponent will never see coming, to a spinning backfist, spinning back-kick, flying knee, Superman punch or even running off the Octagon's gate "like a ninja." Options are a beautiful thing.
While Rutten mentions each one of those knockouts, EA does an excellent job of weaving in gameplay footage from UFC 2, so you can see what he's saying actually play out. The overhand right, in particular, is so authentic, it's almost like you can feel it through the screen.
