There are a few reasons why Kim Kardashian: Hollywood has been such a success. After launching in the summer of 2014, the reality star's app has been downloaded 42 million times, and has made more than $100 million in its first five quarters.
The reason the game continues to do so well is because users can never truly get bored of it. New updates are frequently added to mirror Kardashian West's real life (marriage and babies), which are often announced on Kim K's social media accounts. Talk about exposure.
Even though we doubt the royal member of the first family of reality TV will ever lose her star status, it might be time to pass her crown on to the younger ones. It's only a matter of time before the Jenner girls get their own spinoff series as Kendall continues to rise to supermodel status and Kylie continues to be the queen of Snapchat.
Filling their older sister's shoes in more ways than just one, the Jenner girls recently released their very own version Kim Kardashian: Hollywood. While the Kendall & Kylie app is as close to a knock-off of Kim's game as possible, I am already betting that it will soon outshine Kim K's.
Kardashian vs. Jenner
Developed by Glu Mobile, both Kim Kardashian: Hollywood and Kendall & Kylie look the same and play the same. Both the games allow users to create their own customizable avatar and change their clothes, hairstyle, accessories and makeup as much as they please.
In Kim's version, users befriend the star in hopes of becoming a celebrity themselves, choosing to be an actor, model, fashion designer, etc. The Jenner version has the user becoming besties with the younger sisters, where they work at a hair salon and get their feet wet at modeling, with the goal to become the next big Internet celebrity — because that's exactly we aspire to become these days.
Along the way, users must complete missions to help them rise to fame, which includes tapping on tasks to earn stars. They will meet other members of the family, go on dates and travel to various locations like New York City and Paris.
Queen Kendall & King Kylie
Okay, so we haven't been able to put down Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, so why start over from scratch with the Jenner version? Because it's just so much better.
Those obsessed with social media will quickly find themselves addicted. It's the Kardashian (k)curse. The game lets users be just like King Kylie, taking selfies complete with backgrounds, stickers and various poses like the infamous "duck face." After each mission is complete, a photo is uploaded to a faux Instagram account. The more stars earned during the event-themed mission, the more likes the post gets. The more likes, the closer the user is to becoming Internet famous.
Combining any true Kardashian fan's love for both social media and fashion, dressing your avatar is so much more fun, because players can try out more interesting hair color choices, like the mermaid blue trend, along with more signature looks the girls are known for rocking, including their latest collection from PacSun. Of course, many of these can be accessed through in-app purchases, so play at your own risk. There are also mystery boxes that can be opened regularly to help players get new fashion pieces without having to spend real money — users just have to be patient.
Here's why the Jenner sisters will really take the crown from their older sister:
According to the app store market intelligence company Sensor Tower, Kendall & Kylie was downloaded more than 1.3 million times for iOS in the U.S., and made more than $680,000 via in-app purchases on iPhones and iPads in just five days of its Feb. 17 release. Kim's app, in comparison, was downloaded about 612,000 times for iOS in its first five days after launch, with just $222,000 from in-app purchases.
Kendall & Kylie also hit the number one spot for free titles in the App Store after two days. It held this position for four days, before dropping to No. 2 by the end of February. App Annie reveals the game is still on top. It took Kim's game 24 days to reach No. 1, but stayed there for nine days.
We expect this is just the start of mobile gaming success for the Jenner girls. Kendall & Kylie is available to download for free with in-app purchases for iOS and Android.
