Monday marks the return of Gotham to Fox, and with that comes a slew of new trailers and promos teasing events of the rest of the show's second season.
A new promo released by the network shows a young Bruce Wayne basically vowing to become Batman one day, by promising that he will "one day do something to help the people of Gotham."
Alfred then comments that Bruce's parents, murdered in the first episode of the series, deserve justice and that he knows that Bruce won't stop until he finds their killers. According to this video, that's what Bruce does.
Actor David Mazouz, who portrays Bruce, stated that viewers will soon see the dual sides of the character that is Bruce Wayne, but also Batman.
"He's on a mission," said Mazouz to Monkeys Fighting Robots, who portrays Bruce on the series. "And he really is going to start his dual personality into becoming Batman."
So, who murdered Bruce's parents? Previously, Bruce tortured Silver St. Cloud, niece of Theo Galavan, resulting in her telling him that the name of his parents' killer was M. Malone, alluding to comic book character Matches Malone. Fox confirmed that it cast someone to play that role, but it's also likely that St. Cloud lied about that person being the Waynes' murderer.
In DC Comics, Matches Malone was a New Jersey gangster: after Malone's death, Bruce often went undercover with the name of Matches Malone because it allowed him to infiltrate criminal organizations in a way that he couldn't while using his own identity.
How likely, though, is Bruce to take up such a name on Gotham if Malone is the killer of his family? If the Gotham television series goes that route, with Bruce using Malone as a secret identity, it's likely that Malone is not responsible for the Waynes' deaths.
The video also unveils a peek at some of the villains arriving or returning for the second season of Gotham, including the return of Firefly and Fish Mooney, as well as the arrival of Victor Fries, aka Mr. Freeze, and Hugo Strange. It also looks like Penguin isn't doing too well in Arkham Asylum.
Gotham returns to Fox on Feb. 29 at 8 p.m. EST.
