It seems that Gotham hasn't seen the last of Fish Mooney. Although the character ended up presumably dead after last season's finale, the actress portraying her, Jada Pinkett-Smith, just recently signed on to reprise the role on the series.
TV Line spoke with a representative at Fox and confirmed the return of the character. However, details about how and why Fish returns to the city is still a secret, but it's likely that return will cause a lot of problems for Penguin, who is responsible for her death (or non-death, in this case).
Of course, with so little information about how Fish returns to the series, another possibility is that we see her in flashbacks, perhaps in the memories of Penguin, before he betrayed her to become the king of Gotham's criminal element.
After Penguin pushed Fish into Gotham Harbor during last season's finale, showrunner Bruno Heller commented that this didn't necessarily mean we'd seen the last of that character on the show.
"I would definitely not assume anything in a town like Gotham," said Heller. "It's very unpredictable, the comic book world."
On Gotham, Fish worked for the Falcone crime family and served as the owner of her own nightclub (which now belongs to Penguin). However, she spent much of her time plotting against the head of the Falcone family and attempted to take over Gotham's criminal element. It was Penguin's betrayal that prevented that, though, and Penguin eventually took her out.
Considering that Fish lives for revenge, it's likely that Penguin's life is about to get a lot more complicated (unless, of course, we only see Fish in flashbacks).
Although it seemed like Pinkett-Smith's time was up with Gotham last season, now, the actress has agreed to return to a character that she enjoyed playing.
"I see Fish Mooney as an extreme version of a woman who wears many faces," said Pinkett-Smith last year to Collider. "She is strong, yet afraid. I would say that the Fish Mooney character has, especially in these coming episodes, has been really fun. I love how smart and perceptive she is. She's a criminal. She decided to be a criminal, instead of a doctor."
Gotham returns to Fox on Feb. 29.
