New 'Gotham' Promo Offers Best Look At Mr. Freeze Yet

Things are going to get downright chilly on Gotham when the series returns from its midseason break. Things are also going to get a little more chaotic, if the title of the clip, "Wrath of the Villains," is any indication.

Fox just released a new trailer teasing the rest of the season: the promo offers the most revealing look yet of the iconic Mr. Freeze, as well as a few other peeks at what Gotham viewers can expect when the show returns at the end of February.

Mr. Freeze, aka Victor Fries, will begin life on Gotham as a cryogenics expert for Wayne Enterprises, working on a special project for the company, possibly a freeze gun. As in DC Comics, Fries is a scientist who becomes obsessed with saving his wife, but as is the case with many Batman-related villains, there's an accident and he ends up having to wear a cryogenic suit for the rest of his life.

"We're taking it back to the roots of the origin story," said Gotham executive producer Bruno Heller to TV Guide. "It's about him and his wife before he became a bad guy, how he became a bad guy. It's very much a story of the heart rather than a story about technology and super-villainy. It's a doomed romance. It will make people cry."

Early photos of the character released by Fox hint at the suit that Darrow wears in the role, although most of those are dark and shadowy. However, photos taken of the actor on set recently show a costume many comic book fans will immediately recognize.

Gotham has another legendary DC villain coming up later this season, too: Dr. Hugo Strange.

"He's very much not a 'mwa-ha-ha' villain," said Heller. "He is a man filled with the joys of science. He doesn't think of himself in any way as a bad person. He is the essence of scientific progress and the joy of hope for the future that science promises. He shows us how even that sensibility can be warped into something evil if wrongly used."

Gotham returns to Fox on Feb. 29 at 8 p.m. EST.
