Series Review-Roundup: Fans Struggle With The 'X-Files' Cliffhanger Finale

The short run of the "X-Files" mini-series reboot/revival has come to an end. But instead of going out with a big bang after a slow start with fans clamoring for more, the cliffhanger finale certainly had fans wanting for more - but for the wrong reasons.

The final episode, "My Struggle II," was one which broke open a global conspiracy that quite frankly, left many reviewers yawning or scratching their heads. Instead of answering the fans' most pressing questions like: Where is William? (Scully and Mulder's child who may or may not be a super alien hybrid and should be 15 years old by now); the finale has left most people confused and even somewhat angry at series creator, Chris Carter, who also happened to pen this last episode.

Kaly Soto, for The New York Times, wrote that the finale struggled because it tried too hard to wrap itself around the mythology arc of the original series when really, it could have been done with in two episodes, especially with the limited run of this revival.

"And finally, what was the point of it all? I guess I was a fool for thinking I'd get any answers. And after this disheartening ending, I'm not sure that I care see any more," she wrote.

The last episode of the series has nearly the whole world succumbing to an alien hybrid virus which only a few are spared from. One of them is Agent Monica Reyes whom many fans are even rolling their eyes at the amount of screen time she has seen on this return, and Agent Dana Scully.

Not so lucky was Agent Mulder and so to save him - and the whole world - they will need more of Scully's blood and stem cells. Lots of stem cells. Specifically, stem cells from William, the often referred to but whose whereabouts are unknown.

And at the top of it all, a parting shot of an alien craft which could be humanity's savior or doom.

The original "X-Files" series often concluded each season with a big cliffhanger. So it is no surprise that the mini-series also followed in that tradition. However, many feel it is a slap in the fans' face to end with such a huge question mark since there is no guarantee that another season will be filmed.

As Maureen Ryan for Variety pointed out, another reboot mini-series will depend on how financially successful this one was, however, "the lost opportunities that preceded the clanging, hollow finale - which separated Mulder and Scully for most of the hour - hung over the episode like a ghostly UFO."

Chris Carter on the other hand, weighed in his own thoughts in an interview with E! Online. Instead of confusion, he says he hopes the fans are merely vocalizing their hope for more "X-Files."

"I think that hardcore fans of the show just expect nothing less than this and I think - I hope - people aren't confused. I hope that it was not a confusing ending. If it was perplexing or alarming, I would prefer it to be that," he said.

And although he won't spill the beans quite yet if Mulder will survive the virus or if there will ever be a family reunion with William, he does have one final message for the fans:

"Don't give up."
