The Sony Xperia Z5 lineup, the Xperia Z4 Tablet and the Xperia Z3+ should start getting Android 6.0 Marshmallow from March 7 onward, according to the company's UK branch.
Android fragmentation is often cause for frustration and criticism, as new updates typically take their time to reach non-Nexus devices. Xperia owners are eagerly awaiting the latest Android version and it now looks like it won't take much longer to arrive.
Sony Xperia UK took to its Twitter account to reveal that Android Marshmallow should start rolling out from March 7 for the Xperia Z5, Z4 Tablet and Z3+, but notes that it will confirm exact dates when it's ready.
This indicates that it's still just a tentative timeframe, without actually committing to a specific rollout date. At the same time, it's worth pointing out that such social media updates from company representatives don't always turn out to be accurate. In many cases, these tentative timeframes prove to be way off the mark.
The March 7 rollout most likely refers only to the UK release, as Sony's UK branch doesn't speak for the entire company. If it proves to be true, however, it shouldn't take too long for the update to reach other markets as well, including the U.S.
Sony promised a good while back to update its entire Xperia Z lineup to the latest version of Android and even rolled out its Concept for Android Marshmallow to the Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact back in October 2015. If newer devices are yet to get the upgrade, however, the older Z3 may take even longer.
Back in early December 2015, rumors claimed that the Xperia Z5 would get a taste of Marshmallow in January this year. We're now in February and the update has yet to roll out.
In the past, the company used to offer at least a ballpark timeframe for new firmware releases, but this time it's been quite secretive on the whole affair. Although Sony Xperia UK breaks the silence and offers a tentative timeframe for the update, it may be best not to get your hopes up based solely on a Twitter status.
Should the March release indeed be true, more information will surely surface shortly. The tentative timeframe is still something to go by, and hopefully no cancellations or delays will ruin the scheme.
