Porsche Unveils The New 718 Boxster And Boxster S

Porsche has introduced the new generation of the mid-engine roadsters, the 718 Boxster and 718 Boxster S.

Both models feature more power, higher fuel efficiency and improved handling. The highlight of the Porsche cars is the latest turbocharged 4-cylinder engine.

According to Porsche, the 718 Boxster has a 2-liter engine that produces 300 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. The 718 Boxster S model has a 2.5-liter engine generating 350 horsepower and 309 pound-feet torque. The Boxster S also includes a turbocharger that has variable turbine geometry.

The sports carmaker claims that the latest engines produce 35 extra horsepower in comparison to the previous models of the Boxster. The engines are also efficient by about 14 percent when compared to their their predecessors.

The 718 Boxster can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds, which is an improvement of 0.7-second from the older model. The 718 Boxster S can get from to a speed of 60 miles per hour in just 4.0 seconds, a 0.5-second improvement from its predecessor.

The two new models have six-speed manual transmission. An optional feature is the PDK dual-clutch transmission, the company's "fuel-saving virtual gears" which allow the system to partially engage two adjacent gears for creating an intermediate gear that improves car speed as well as fuel efficiency.

Porsche says that the company has also changed the chassis of the cars with a re-tuned suspension that accommodates the latest engines while keeping the weight well-distributed. The cars are operated with electro-mechanical power steering, which is 10 percent more direct.

People looking for enhanced handling may also opt for the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), which includes a 10mm reduction in ride height.

The 718 Boxster and the 718 Boxster S also have a new design. The front of the cars looks wider and has a muscular appearance. Another prominent design feature of the cars is the redesigned Bi-Xenon headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights.

"From a side view, identifying features of the new model line include new, independently styled wings and side sills," says Porsche.

The air inlet panels are larger and have two fins, giving the cars a more dynamic look.

The doors of the cars are also designed without the door handle recess covers. The cars have 19-inch wheels as standard. Optional 20-inch wheels are also available for customers.

Both the new models will arrive in the U.S. showrooms in June this year. The starting price of the 718 Boxster and the 718 Boxster S will be $56,000 and $68,400 respectively, excluding the $1,050 destination charge.
