Los Angeles-based radio station KCRW has announced that it is launching a new free virtual reality app, with the goal being to put users inside intimate performances in the legendary basement studio of the radio station.
The app is designed to work with Google Cardboard and is launching with music videos from a number of big artists, including the likes of Death Cab for Cutie, Brandie Carlile and more.
"Now for the first time, you can be in our studio with the artists. It's a revolutionary change in the way KCRW curated artists and music can be discovered," said Jennifer Ferro, president of KCRW, in a statement. "We are always striving for creative ways to connect with our community and we're so excited to try out this new technology together."
The rig being used to capture the content was custom-built by GoPro and features eight GoPro cameras, each of which can capture stereoscopic 3D. Those videos are then stitched together to create a 360-degree immersive experience.
According to KCRW, more content is set to be added to the app over time and will feature videos of performances from the likes of Penguin Prison, Shana Halligan, Korey Dane and more.
The app is available for download for both iOS and Android, and within it, users can also purchase the KCRW Cardboard for a $5 donation, although if you don't want to, you can use it with any other version of Cardboard. The videos can also be watched through the KCRW YouTube channel as 360-degree videos.
