A new Power Rangers movie is in the works, and it's looking to reboot the franchise for a new generation. While we don't yet know what that film will look like, we can at least fantasize about one Power Rangers movie that will never see the light of day.
You may remember the gritty, Power Rangers fan film that took the web by storm last year. It was dark, bloody and over-the-top. People loved it, even if Power Rangers owner Saban didn't.
That video inspired more than a few directors to look at making an official film. Concept artists Alex Ruiz and Gregory Semkow were brought on board to help visualize one director's pitch for a darker, more adult version of Power Rangers. As Ruiz writes in a post on DeviantArt, the trailer "lit the fire under many asses to get a full on Hollywood film made." So Ruiz and Semkow got to work, re-imagining classic Power Rangers characters like Zordon, Rita Repulsa, Alpha and the mighty Megazord.
Sadly, the version of the film the pair worked on was ultimately rejected.
"Unfortunately our guy didn't get it, it went to another director," Ruiz writes. "Such is the nature of the film business. And if you want to be a concept artist, you have to accept that most of what you work on might never be seen and/or made. Many things fail, or get shelved, of indefinitely postponed, usually early on but sometimes even in production. This means you might not be able to show the work you did on that project for a very long time, if ever."
But just because the film won't be made doesn't mean the artwork isn't gorgeous to look at. From a Megazord with the Power Rangers visible to the constantly changing look of Repulsa's costume, there are tons of cool ideas here that fans will want to take a look at. We can only hope the official Power Rangers film is as cool as these images. You can check out Ruiz's and Semkow's work below.
