When is Xiaomi's Mi 5 finally coming? We've got all the ingredients that may just make up the phone. Everything from the device's processor, camera, battery, and even pictures of it have already leaked online.
Describing the upcoming device as "very, very good" and very much "worth the wait," Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun is still very tight-lipped about when we can actually get our hands on the Mi 5.
Much like Google's Nexus line of Android phones, Xiaomi offers a great mix of value and features in their product line that they've been able to cultivate a cult following in its home country of China.
Moreover, unlike major phone manufacturers like Apple and Google who churn out yearly reincarnations of their best-selling name brand devices like the iPhone and Nexus, Xiaomi takes its sweet time. Like clockwork, most of us have come to expect a new model of this or that phone every year, but Xiaomi takes anywhere between 12 to 18 months to finally develop a finished product.
January of 2016, however, is when the rumors peg the Mi 5 to finally be revealed and released to the public. It will be the first phone equipped with Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 820 chipset, but the company won't get lost in the marketing whirlwind of "firsts." Rather, Xiaomi will "put greater importance on the user experience and mass production, rather than being first," according to Jun.
Because Xiaomi's Mi line already includes "Note" and "Note Pro" variants which feature phablet-sized displays, the Mi is expected to have a more handy 5.2-inch screen. Interestingly, however, leaked photos of what may be the Mi 5's casing show that it could sport a slightly smaller display at 5 inches and a physical home button (probably making way for the industry standard fingerprint reader).
Will the display be of a run-of-the-mill 1080p resolution? That'd be a safe bet, but we're hoping to see the Mi 5 equipped with a higher resolution 2K display. Other well-traveled tech bits making their rounds on the Internet include either 16 or 20-megapixel camera, 16, 64 and 128 GB storage variants, 4 GB of RAM, a roomy 3,000 mAh battery, and a $385 price tag. Finally, like the iPhone and probably the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S7, the Mi 5 is expected to incorporate some kind of 3D Touch-like technology within its display panel.
