The ongoing Mobile World Congress 2025 (MWC) has introduced massive prototypes of the future of technology, and Samsung has an entry that it calls the Flex Gaming foldable console concept.
At first glance, one may be surprised that Nintendo made a foldable version of its Switch Lite console, but it is actually from the South Korean tech giant.
With this new device, Samsung has fused portable or handheld gaming consoles and foldable tech found mostly in smartphones and laptops.
This is Not a Foldable Nintendo Switch Lite but Samsung's New Concept
Samsung Display unpacked a massive showcase over at MWC 2025 and one of the eye-catching developments iis its new Flex Gaming portable handheld console that is also a foldable. According to Samsung Display (via SamMobile), this new device is only a proof-of-concept for now, and it offers a twist to standard handheld gaming consoles.
At first glance, it looks like an eerie twin of the Nintendo Switch Lite with its rounded square corners, almost similar controller configuration, and its screen right at the middle of the device.
The company said that it features a 7.2-inch foldable OLED display that breaks down the console into two halves, and either side of the built-in controller has holes in them to account for the device's joystick.
Samsung Flex Gaming: Foldable Handheld Console Unveiled
There are still no specifics regarding the device as of writing, and it remains unknown if this will make it to mass production and be available for public purchase.
That being said, it is already a breath of fresh air for foldables and handhelds, offering a smaller form for portable gaming space, which is set to bring new experiences for all.
Handhelds Gaming and Foldable Smartphones
Handheld gaming has been a constant in the tech world thanks to Nintendo's Game Boy, and handhelds have had significant moments through the years before its popularity boosted once more thanks to Valve's Steam Deck.
While Nintendo's Switch was a pivotal handheld, the likes of the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Legion GO, and more gave the world a PC-like handheld that offers a different gaming experience.
Mobile technology has greatly evolved in the past years, with the smartphone industry significantly changing to different experiences for users, which was greatly seen with foldable devices. Samsung and the likes of Oppo, OnePlus, Huawei, and more made foldables popular in the market, and the public pushed for more innovations like the improved hinges for gapless folds or removing the creases on screens.
It remains to be seen if marrying the concepts of foldables and handheld gaming can be successful, but it seems Samsung is more than ready to try.
