Google wants to make it easier for video game developers to bring titles to Chromecast and other Google Cast devices.
That's precisely why the tech company launched the Google Cast Remote Display plugin for Unity on Thursday, aiming to empower developers to take more Unity titles straight to your television. Google says users can download the Remote Display plugin for Unity from the Unity Asset Store or GitHub.
The way the Google Cast Remote works is it generates a local display on your Android or iOS mobile device and then zaps a high quality remote display on your TV. The hope is that more game developers will combine the Google Cast Remote Display with the Unity platform to pump out more high-end games on Chromecast and other Google Cast devices.
There are already games that have used the plugin for Unity, including Monopoly Here & Now and Risk, and Google promises many more on the way. Existing Unity games can also import the Remote Display system, while adding the CastRemoteDisplayManager to work on games.
Once set up, developers will have to weigh certain options carefully, such as adapting your game to support a multi-screen user view to using your mobile device to create controls or even creating virtual controls to enhance gamers' overall experience.
Google also throws caution to developers to not create rapid up-and-down movement within their games — something that the company says could trigger fatigue with gamers.
Google Cast is also offering its Game UX Guidelines for developers to get the most out of their created titles.
