Star Wars Battlefront perfectly captures the look and feel of Star Wars, but it's not exactly the deepest shooter on the market. Players can customize their loadouts to an extent, but few of the weapons truly stand out from each other, resulting in gunplay that can become boring after several hours of play.
The word "casual" has been tossed around with Star Wars Battlefront, and it turns out that it's an accurate description. EA CFO Blake Jorgensen says Battlefront was designed to be accessible to the widest audience possible.
"Star Wars Battlefront is a first-person shooter, but it is [one of] the only teen-rated first-person shooters," Jorgensen said at the Nasdaq Investor Conference in Europe this week (via Gamespot). "We had designed it to be a much more accessible product to a wide age group.
"So, an eight-year-old could play with his father on the couch, as well as a teenager or 20-year-old could play the game and enjoy it. It is more accessible. And for the hardcore, it may not have the depth that they wanted in the game."
To learn that Battlefront was designed to be accessible to a wide range of players isn't terribly surprising. Most gamers who have played the game might have guessed as much after spending a few hours battling it out in Battlefront's various multiplayer modes. By making Battlefront easy to dive into for those who may not be experienced shooter players, EA expects to sell more copies of the game and capitalize on the insane levels of hype surrounding Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It's all business, which is exactly by Jorgensen goes on to say he is confident the game will reach its shipment target of 13 million copies.
What is surprising is how Jorgensen openly states that the game might not have the depth more hardcore shooter players were seeking. Even if it's what many players might be saying, for the CFO of EA to openly come out and say the game doesn't have enough depth for gaming's most vocal audience is a little shocking. Hopefully, the arrival of the game's first expansion packs will add some much-needed variety to Star Wars Battlefront's gameplay. Until then, players can enjoy the free Battle of Jakku DLC, available to all players on Dec. 8.
