Android 6.0 Marshmallow is the next big software update for Android-powered devices and the Sony Xperia Z5 will get the new operating system (OS) in January 2016.
Sony unveiled the Xperia Z5 at the IFA in September this year. The smartphone comes running on Android 5.1 Lollipop straight out of the box. In early October this year, Sony confirmed a list of devices that will get Android 6.0 Marshmallow update.
"We will make Android 6.0, Marshmallow available for: Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Compact, Xperia Z5 Premium, Xperia Z4 Tablet, Xperia Z3+, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia M5, Xperia C5 Ultra, Xperia M4 Aqua and Xperia C4," per a Sony blog.
Even though Sony confirmed a list of devices that will receive the latest Android operating system, the smartphone maker did not reveal the exact roll out date for the software.
Now a tweet from @Ricciolo1 suggests that Xperia Z5 models will get Android 6.0 Marshmallow in January 2016.
The unlocked variants of the Xperia Z5 handsets should be the first one to get the software update. However, all carriers do not issue a software release for a smartphone at the same time. One carrier may release Android 6.0 Marshmallow in a specific month; however, another carrier may release the update months after. This means some customers may have to wait longer to get the latest Android OS on their Xperia Z5.
Android 6.0 Marshmallow will bring several new features to an Android-powered device such as Doze and App Standby mode, which preserves battery life of devices. The app menu on Android 6.0 Marshmallow is also very different when compared to Android 5.1 Lollipop.
Android 6.0 Marshmallow also brings in new control and security features to devices.
"No need to give apps access all the time. Android Marshmallow lets you define what you want to share and when. Turn permissions off at any time, too," according to Android.
Only a limited number of Nexus and non-Nexus mobile devices are currently running on the latest software. Many Xperia Z5 customers will be keen to experience the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow on their mobile phone, but will have to wait until Sony and individual carriers confirm the software release date.
