A top Motorola executive has announced that initial development on the Android 6.0 Marshmallow release to the Moto X Style and the second-gen Moto X has started and the handsets will get the software update in phases.
David Schuster, Software Product Management senior director at Motorola, took on to Google Plus and confirmed that the 2015 Moto X Style (3rd Gen) in both Brazil and India and the 2014 Moto X (2nd Gen) in Brazil retail will be getting Android 6.0 Marshmallow in the coming weeks.
Schuster's Google Plus post revealed that the update will be released in phases and customers should get a notification when they have received the latest Android operating system.
Motorola launched the second-generation Moto X last September 2014 and it came running on Android 4.4 KitKat. The smartphone received Android 5.0 Lollipop in November 2014 and was upgraded to Android 5.1 Lollipop in April 2015.
The Moto X Style made its way to the markets in September this year and had Android 5.1 Lollipop pre-installed. Android 6.0 Marshmallow will be the smartphone's first major software upgrade.
Schuster also posted the changelog for the update that will bring new features and bug fixes to the Motorola phones.
Following the software upgrade, owners will be able to check the memory usage of their installed apps via the latest Memory Manager tool.
Users will find that the volume controls on their devices have been enhanced for better volume management. Owners of the Moto X Style and the second-gen Moto X will also get a 'do not disturb' button in the quick settings panel for quick and easy access.
The system UI tuner will now appear in the settings menu at the bottom when it is enabled. Google Now on Tap will allow contextual information to be delivered based on the content on a user's screen with a long press of the home key.
Android 6.0 Marshmallow also brings a battery management feature called Doze, which detects when the smartphone is not being used and then putting the handset in sleep mode to save battery.
The software update will bring better storage and RAM manager via settings. An app backup feature saves apps as well as its associated data that allows users to use their apps without any hassles after they are restored.
Schuster also announced that Motorola has started Android 6.0 Marshmallow approval process for the third-generation Moto X Pure Edition. The company hopes to push the new OS to the smartphone in the coming weeks.
Moto X Style and second-generation Moto X owners in other territories will hope that their phones receive Android 6.0 Marshmallow at the earliest.
