After the Islamic State released a threatening propaganda video on Wednesday, New York City residents remain unfazed.
The footage consists of ISIS praising the recent Paris attacks as well as scenes of the streets in the city, including Times Square and Herald Square, and it uses clips from a previous video of a suicide bomber getting ready to attack Times Square.
In response, Mayor Bill De Blasio had a few simple words to New Yorkers in light of the recent development.
"Don't live in fear. If our society shuts down, the terrorists have won without ever coming here in any force. And we are not going to allow them to win," he says, addressing the residents of the city.
According to authorities in New York City, they promise that they are prepared for the possible terror attacks.
"Be aware, but do not be afraid. The NYPD will protect you. We cannot be intimidated, and that's what terrorists seek to do. They seek to create fear. They seek to intimidate. We will not be intimidated, and we will not live in fear," William Bratton, police commissioner, says.
Despite using old images of the city, the video is recent, as it features French President François Hollande giving a speech after the Paris attacks. Bratton also comments that the footage was "hastily produced."
The New York Daily News reported several New York civilians' responses regarding the threat.
"That doesn't bother me at all. We all gotta die someday," Shawn Ellis, 37, an employee at TGI Fridays in Times Square, which is one of the locations that showed up in the ISIS video.
Some are sending out a warning to ISIS.
"They'll realize that New York is not France. We'll fight back. If you're shooting, I'll attack your a**. There's no fear here," Fred Crawford, a ticket seller for city attractions, says.
Shoppers have been going in and out of places as if nothing happened, but not everyone feels the same way.
"I did see it, and it freaked me out," a worker at GAP says.
Armed police officers are patrolling the areas in Times Squares and Herald Square, but other than that, everything else is going normally.
