ISIS Video Threatens New York City But Authorities Remind: 'Be Aware, But Do Not Be Afraid'

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has released a new video that hints at a potential terrorist threat to New York City. The commissioner of the New York Police Department (NYPD), however, advises people to "be aware" but not to live in fear.

ISIS considers the U.S. its enemy and wants to target a busy city that may affect the entire nation.

The video shows suicide bombers zipping up their jackets and getting ready for an attack, and contains images of bombs and street scenes of the famous Times Square and Herald Square.

Some scenes in the video are not new, but the footage shows that the city remains a prime target of terrorist groups.

"Stoking fear is the goal of terrorist organizations, but New York City will not be intimidated," stated Bill de Blasio, New York City mayor. "New Yorkers won't live in fear and people should continue to go to work, live their lives, and enjoy the greatest city in the world."

De Blasio added that the NYPD is the most capable police force in the country. Security in busy areas of the city, which include Times Square and Herald Square, has been increased as a precautionary measure. The mayor also said that, even though the ISIS video shows scenes of New York City, the message does not pose a credible threat to the city.

William Bratton, NYC police commissioner, acknowledged that holiday season in the city will start soon.

"Be aware but do not be afraid," Bratton advised.

New York City's annual traditions, such as Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting ceremony, draw millions of visitors to the city. These events also contribute to the economy.

Bratton promises that the NYPD will protect the city.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo also said that security in the entire city has been heightened following the deadly Paris attacks on Friday, Nov. 13, which left more than 120 people dead and more than 400 injured.
