No one ever said living in the Wild West was easy. In Hard West, a new video game by CreativeForge, players follow the story of Warren, a man forced to make hard choices in order to survive in a world where the Wild West meets the supernatural.
Of course, Hard West isn't the first game set in the Wild West, but it offers some unique gameplay elements, including turn-based combat that allows players to control squad members who have western-inspired abilities, such as gunslinging.
However, there's more to Hard West than meets the eye: each mission is based on a story, involving choices that characters make that affect the game later on.
"When a tragic turn of events sets one man down a path of supernatural chaos and revenge, he must brutally hunt down all those who wronged him," writes CreativeForge on the game's Steam page. "Follow Warren on his descent into the darkest recesses of the human soul, and try to survive in a world full of hard choices and even harder consequences."
CreativeForge also released a video featuring the first 15 minutes of gameplay. If the music sounds vaguely familiar in the game, it's because its composer is Marcin Przybyłowicz who also created the music for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Other features of Hard West that make it stand out include weapons inspired by those from the real Wild West all based on "real outlandish prototypes, designs and ideas from the era."
Gunslingers can also use the power of ricochet when firing at enemies, as well as allow characters to spot villains by the shadows they cast: There is also an extensive cover system for characters to use to protect themselves from attack.
"Fight and survive through eight unique story-based scenarios, and try your hand at 40 individually designed turn-based combat missions," writes CreativeForge. "Journey deeper into the world of Hard West and meet a colorful cast of playable characters whose fates are intimately intertwined with yours."
Hard West is the second game from CreativeForge. It's story comes courtesy of Haris Orkin, the writer behind Dying Light and Call of Juarez.
Hard West releases on November 18 and is now available for pre-order on Steam with a 20 percent discount, bringing the price to $15.99.
