With a new Star Wars movie releasing next month, Star Wars references are everywhere. But one reference that was not expected recently turned up in a video game.
One Reddit user spotted several familiar Star Wars creatures while playing the Starcraft II: Legacy of the Void expansion pack. Those creatures are Ewoks, the adorable fuzzy little beings that inhabit the planet of Endor and helped the Rebel Alliance defeat the Empire at the Battle of Endor.
The game is by Blizzard Entertainment, which often likes to put pop culture references in their titles (this is most evident in the developer's World of Warcraft game). In Legacy of the Void, Ewoks peek from behind plants, bushes and trees during a mission that takes place on a planet called Endion - a name surely chosen because of its similarity to Endor. Even more interesting is that the mission set on Endion involves going to the surface of the planet to destroy a shield generator for a massive orbital station. That scenario should sound familiar to fans of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi because that's what the Ewoks helped Han Solo and his team do with a shield generator for the Death Star in that film.
One Reddit user even pointed out that the forest-covered Endion is not really a planet at all, but a moon, like Endor in the films. It seems Blizzard has some Star Wars fans among its developers.
The Reddit user, sinister_shoggoth, posted a screenshot of one of these Ewoks, which many players might miss if they're not looking for it.
StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void released earlier this week as an expansion pack for StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, a PC-based real-time strategy game.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens releases December 18.
