HD remakes have been pretty popular of late, and by the looks of it, that's not going to change anytime soon. Love it or hate it, game publishers are turning to their back-catalogs of games rather than coming up with new ones.
The latest announcement comes from Square Enix, which said in its annual report that its plan for next year involved a number of HD remakes.
"We will revitalize some of our strong IPs in ways that meet the needs of the modern gaming market," said the report. "For example, we will take an IP developed for earlier generations of game consoles and recreate it for the latest consoles, while also proactively developing versions for play on smart devices."
In particular, it's likely we'll see a number of Final Fantasy games being ported over to the latest generation of gaming consoles, with several of them having even been brought over to iOS and Android. The biggest remake yet will be of Final Fantasy VII, which will make it to newer consoles.
That's not where the company will stop, however. According to the report, Square Enix will also dabble in virtual reality. Perhaps in the near future, we will be able to experience the world of Final Fantasy as if we were actually there.
Of course, remakes won't be the sole focus of Square Enix, thankfully. The company has said that it will double down on creating new franchises in the near future.
Perhaps more interesting, the company says that it is open to "joint collaborations" for single releases or even for projects of with wider scope. The report didn't offer any details as to who the company might be aiming to collaborate with, however, the report did have a section about China, discussing the shift in China to mobile games. It's certainly possible that Square Enix will collaborate with a Chinese company on developing games for mobile platforms.
