'The Flash' Behind-The-Scenes Video Shows Two Complicated Family Relationships

When it comes to family relationships on The CW's The Flash, things are rather complicated.

Take Barry Allen (Grant Gustin), for example. Because his father spent most of his life in prison accused of a crime he didn't commit, Barry grew up with Joe West (Jesse L. Martin) as his father figure. However, once Barry's father left prison, he also left Barry, knowing that if he stayed, he'd only get in the way of Barry being the superhero Central City needs.

Joe's daughter, Iris (Candice Patton), long thought that her mother was dead, so her family revolved around her father and Barry. However, last week's episode of The Flash revealed that Iris' mother isn't dead at all, and is, in fact, very much alive and just returned to Central City.

It seems Joe told Iris that her mother died to protect Iris from the truth: her mother left them of her own free will.

Now, Joe has to deal with how that's going to affect his relationship with Iris, as well as make Iris question her next move: does she meet with the woman who abandoned her as a child?

In a behind-the-scenes video released by The CW, we see this complicated situation as it arises with commentary by executive producer Gabrielle Stanton.

What's probably going to become an even worse situation for Joe, though, is that it looks like he tells Barry about Iris' mother's return first, so that's likely to make Iris even angrier about her father's long-standing lie about her mother.

The video also shows the complicated relationship between Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) and his father (Michael Ironside). Apparently, though, the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree, because in the clip, it seems that Captain Cold and his dad are about to pull off a heist. "Okay, son, make me proud," says his father.

Things are really weird, though, because the clip also shows Barry talking to Lisa Snart, Captain Cold's sister. Team Flash forms an alliance with Lisa this week after she tells him that someone kidnapped her brother.

Here's the official synopsis for the episode:

"When Barry (Grant Gustin) and the team find out Captain Cold (guest star Wentworth Miller) has been kidnapped, they form an uneasy alliance with his sister, Lisa (guest star Peyton List). However, Barry feels double-crossed when he finds out Snart is working with his father, Lewis Snart (guest star Michael Ironside) on a heist. Meanwhile, Joe (Jesse L. Martin) is faced with a difficult decision."

The Flash airs on The CW on Tuesdays.
