They're back.
In May of 2002, The X-Files went off the air, and Fox Mulder and Dana Scully were booted from the FBI and went on the run. When we caught back up with them again in 2008, Scully was working as a surgeon while Mulder remained in hiding. But the FBI soon came calling, needing his assistance with a murder case, and declared that "all's forgiven."
So fans have been wondering for months now: When the TV series returns in 2016, will Mulder and Scully still operate outside of law enforcement? The FBI and its culture was a huge part of the original series, after all, and part of what gave it so much legitimacy as a mainstream drama.
At last we have an answer. In a new promotional spot, actress Gillian Anderson addresses the camera (aka, an unknown character) and proclaims, "I'm Special Agent Dana Scully. This is Special Agent Fox Mulder."
The brief teaser also sees Mulder questioning the nature of his entire quest for the truth about alien life and even the X-Files themselves, wondering aloud if maybe everything they thought they knew was a lie.
It's a far too short clip at just thirty seconds, but for fans waiting to hear if their favorite federal agents are back, it's more than enough.
The X-Files returns to the small screen for a special six-episode run on January 24, 2016.
