If you ever wanted to stand before Superman himself, you will soon be able to. Movie prop collector Screen Used will be holding an online auction on July 12, and one of Christopher Reeve's costumes from "Superman III" will be up for bid as the centerpiece of the online auction.
"This is the only original Superman costume ever to be released to the public with full Warner Brothers Archives sanctioning," Screen Used stated in a press release.
Christopher Reeve wore the famous blue, red and yellow costume for the film "Superman III." Released in 1983, the film is considered somewhat of a departure from the first two movies due to more comedic content from co-star Richard Pryor.
Superman has become a part of American pop culture since the character's debut in the first issue of "Action Comics" back in June 1938. Since then, the character has appeared in thousands of comics, hundreds of live-action and animated television episodes and several films. Christopher Reeve's portrayal of the superhero is likely the most recognized worldwide. Recently, British actor Henry Cavill gave the latest depiction of the character, in the 2013 film "Man of Steel."
The opening bid for the Superman costume is $65,000. The costume is presented on a custom mannequin that is posed in a position the character uses in the films. The head is modeled after actor Christopher Reeve himself, though it is painted white, to emphasize the colors of the costume. The boots and cape are replicas, to complete the costume.
There are other materials tied to the Superman character up for auction, including some props from the "Smallville" TV show, the recent "Man of Steel" film and test costume pieces from two unproduced films: "Superman Lives" (to be directed by Tim Burton) and "Superman: Flyby" (directed by J.J. Abrams).
Other props and costumes in the auction are from: "21 Jump Street," "Aliens," "Austin Powers," "Back to the Future 2," "Batman," "Breaking Bad," "Dark Knight Rises," "Elf," Heroes," "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," "Jurassic Park," "Return of the Jedi," "Star Trek" films and TV shows, "Terminator 2," "True Blood" and more.
This is the seventh online auction for Screen Used. The auction will be held at icollector.com on July 12, at 1:00 p.m. EST.
