Netflix has pulled out all the stops in promoting its upcoming Marvel series Jessica Jones, starring Krysten Ritter in the title role.
Today, the subscription service released its fifth teaser trailer for the series, this time showing a little more of Jessica's Alias Investigations. In this trailer, though, Jessica doesn't seem so tough: in fact, by the end of the clip, she seems visibly disturbed.
Of course, that probably has something to do with the presence of the Purple Man (David Tennant) inside Jessica's mind: that becomes evident when she puts together a stack of photos into a shape that looks like his face.
The clip features a haunting Purple Man voiceover telling Jessica that he knows all her secrets, about her friends and about her powers. "I know everything about you," says the villain at the end of the teaser.
In Marvel Comics, Purple Man is Dr. Zebediah Killgrave, a supervillain who can use his voice to control the actions of others. He turned purple after getting doused with a chemical (similar to the Joker in Tim Burton's Batman). This chemical spill also gave him superpowers: the ability to tell people exactly what to do, basically turning them into his puppets.
In Alias, the comic book series that introduced Jessica to the world, Jessica actually quits life as a superhero after a particularly terrifying experience with Purple Man where he controlled her for months. This prompted her to hang up her superhero costume and become a private investigator.
It's not certain if Killgrave will actually have purple skin in the Netflix series, but if this trailer is anything to go on, he'll still be just as horrifying.
Perhaps even more scary is the thought that Killgrave probably won't get defeated at the end of the first season of Jessica Jones: reports recently surfaced that he'll also be the big bad guy on the separate Luke Cage series.
In the comics, Jessica and Luke are a couple, so it's likely that viewers will see some crossover between the Jessica Jones and Luke Cage series, and both characters could even turn up on the next season of Daredevil, as well as the first season of Iron Fist. All four characters will then come together for a series based on The Defenders.
In the meantime, if fans want more Jessica Jones, they can check out Marvel's free new one-shot comic based on the character, now available on ComiXology.
Jessica Jones premieres on Netflix on Nov. 20.
