After years of waiting, the DC Cinematic Universe is finally starting to take shape. Next year's Suicide Squad and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice will be the first films in DC's 10-movie, five-year plans...but that's just the beginning.
Once the first Justice League movie hits theaters in 2017, DC plans on putting out more and more individual movies - basically, each of the publisher's major heroes is getting their own film. The Flash is no exception: despite already finding major success on the small screen, Barry Allen will be headed to theaters in 2018. Surprisingly, Warner Bros. may have already found the project's director.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Seth Grahame-Smith is currently in talks to direct The Flash. If the rumors are true, The Flash will be Grahame-Smith's first foray into directing: while Grahame-Smith has worked as an author and screenwriter for years, he's never directed a major motion picture. That being said, The Flash won't be Grahame-Smith's first time working with DC, as he's currently writing LEGO Batman, due out in 2017.
Grahame-Smith is best known for his mash-up novels Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. And, while both of Grahame-Smith's novels have been or will be adapted into films, he's never directed before.
It's still a bit strange that DC isn't taking advantage of its TV properties for its cinematic universe, especially when The Flash is doing so well on its own. DC has confirmed that none of its TV stars will be making an appearance on the big screen, as the television shows take place in their own separate universe.
Then again, considering how convoluted DC's parallel universes have gotten in the comics, maybe keeping everything separated is for the best.
The Flash is scheduled to hit theaters in March 2018.
