Jailbreak fans will be happy to know that an untethered jailbreak has been released for iOS 7.1.1. The news comes hot on the heels of an impending iOS 7.1.2 update.
There was a time when Apple's iPhone was extremely limited in some of its features and capabilities. The first-generation iPhone shipped with a set of applications created by Apple, including Safari, iPod, Mail, Weather, Maps and more that were designed to use the smartphone's multitouch technology.
While Apple's apps were high quality and in a class by themselves, the lack of third-party apps and missing features led to hackers taking Apple's shortcomings into their own hands and created what is known as jailbreaking. This gives users more access to parts of the iOS than Apple would prefer and allows iOS devices to do things not supported by Apple, like using widgets, applying themes, tweaks, and more.
Users running iOS 7.1.1 have been waiting for an untethered jailbreak solution to become available, so they'll be happy to know that Pangu for iOS 7.1.1 has been released.
Redmond Pie put an iOS 7.1.1 untethered jailbreak tutorial together to walk through the steps. The devices compatible with Pangu are as follows:
- iPad Air
- iPad mini Retina
- iPad mini
- iPad 4, 3, 2
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 5c
- iPhone 5
- iPhone 4s
- iPhone 4
- iPod Touch 5
The tool is currently only available for Windows but a Mac OS X version is expected shortly. The Pangu tool will work on iOS 7.1 to iOS 7.1.1 devices.
It's always best to make sure to have a backup using iCloud or locally through iTunes before performing any jailbreak. The instructions are straightforward and easy to understand.
Once finished, users will find the very familiar Cydia app that is the central repository for all tweaks, themes, games, apps, etc. Pangu also installs a Chinese app store with illegal apps, but Redmond Pie claims that it does not contain any malware.
Apple is widely expected to release iOS 7.1.2 in the near future to address an iMessage bug and other fixes before it releases iOS 8 in the fall. Users might want to jump on this jailbreak before Apple sends out iOS 7.1.2 OTA (over the air).
