iPhone 6 rear case leak shows new cutout for Apple logo that might be used for notifications

New images of what is reportedly Apple's upcoming iPhone 6's rear shell have leaked. The images show an aluminum frame with cutouts for the Apple logo, camera, microphone, side power button and more.

It's that time of year again, when details of Apple's upcoming iPhone begin to leak on an almost daily basis. We already know that the folks in Cupertino are preparing to release two iPhone 6 models; a 4.7-inch smartphone and a 5.5-inch phablet. The new models mark the second change in size from the original iPhone released in 2007 with its 3.5-inch display, to the 4-inch display introduced with the iPhone 5 in 2012.

In a world where Android smartphones commonly start out with 5-inch displays, it's high time that Apple catches up and begins giving iPhone fans similar-sized devices. The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will go head-to-head with smartphones like the 5.1-inch Samsung Galaxy S5 and 5-inch HTC One M8. The 5.5-inch iPhone 6 will battle it out with both the 5.7-inch Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and LG's just-announced 5.5-inch G3.

Several new images of Apple's iPhone 6 rear case have leaked and were posted to Nowhereelse. The images show an aluminum case that has cutouts for its camera, flash, volume and mute switches. Two new cutouts not seen on previous iPhone models are for its side power button and rear Apple logo. The site believes the new cutout for the Apple logo is designed to allow it to light up (similar to Apple's notebook designs) and serve double duty by providing notification alerts. It's worth noting that Apple uses similar cutouts for its iPads, which do not light up or provide users with any notifications.

Other leaked images show how thin the iPhone 6 will be when it's released. The change in location of its power button from the top of the smartphone to its side follows the same design scheme of many Android smartphones with 5+-inch screens. The placement makes it easier for users to wake their smartphones without feeling the need to awkwardly stretch their fingers while holding the device in their hands.

While there's no way to be sure that these iPhone 6 images are indeed legit, they do line up with previously leaked images and reports. You can also be rest assured that we'll begin to see more and more images and details leak in the weeks leading up to September, when Apple is widely expected to hold its iPhone 6 event.
