A new trailer promoting next week's episode of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. shows the team picking up right where it left off with this week's episode.
That means if you haven't yet seen the most recent episode, you probably won't want to watch this trailer, because there was a major reveal about the status of one of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s key members.
Spoiler Alert!
In the new trailer, we see the team begin its hunt for Agent Simmons, who isn't just missing after being absorbed in last season's finale by an alien monolith, but is trapped somewhere on another planet across the universe.
The team isn't alone in its search — Peter MacNicol returns to the series as an Asgardian who wants to help the team find Simmons.
The trailer also shows the rise of Ward (Brett Dalton) as he begins plans to rebuild HYDRA (in other words, cut off one head, Ward takes its place). Ward's version of HYDRA, however, is much more modern.
"Ward isn't for formality and all of that," said Dalton to Comic Vine. "Nobody's twirling their mustache in this particular version of HYDRA. Nobody's spitting back with their sniveling or cackling in an evil way. That's not what this is about this season. It's maybe a more stripped down version of it. But it's going to be cool because this is somebody that we know is extremely capable and might have a grudge or two against Coulson."
This season, the members of the S.H.I.E.L.D. team have a lot on their plates: not only are they on the hunt for Simmons, but they're also trying to save Inhumans before they accidentally hurt a lot of people — and they're trying to protect those Inhumans from the Advanced Threat Containment Unit (ATCU) led by Rosalind Price (Constance Zimmer).
In an interview, Clark Gregg, who portrays Agent Coulson on the series, stated that Season 3 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is where the series needed to go all along.
"I think the real meat of what we're going for here [is about to start]," said Gregg to zap2it.. "The show constantly re-invents itself, like a comic book. But I feel like what we're getting into this season is what the show has always been driving toward."
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs on ABC on Tuesdays.
