Microsoft is set to roll out a huge update and platform change to its Project Spark game creation tool on Oct. 5.
The development team announced that the biggest change brought about by the update is the tool's shift from being a free-to-play model to a free and open creation platform. As a result, new and existing users of Project Spark will automatically gain access to all downloadable content that had been previously offered as a paid feature.
"Project Spark will be rolling out its biggest update and platform change," wrote Rahul Sandil, head of Microsoft Studios Team Xbox, in a blog post. "This update overhauls many Project Spark systems and areas."
There are currently more than 200,000 creators in the Project Spark community, with the platform seeing new games being uploaded by as many as 300 to 400 every day. It now has amassed a total of 46 DLC packs and more than 2,000 assets, all of which will be made available at no cost to users.
The only issue is that Microsoft doesn't seem to have any plans of producing more content.
"We will no longer create episodic adventures, including future Conker's Big Reunion episodic content," the post added.
Microsoft has also provided a response to those who may be wondering what will happen after they have purchased Project Spark digital content.
According to the company, all users who have made their purchases on or after July 28 this year, including those who purchased a retail disc and have it activated by redeeming a product key on the said date, will be given a refund.
The same refund will be given to those who have a remainder balance from their in-game token purchases.
In addition, the development team said that Project Spark will also launch a number of various content, updates and features in order to deliver a more enhanced gaming experience. These include an increase in the maximum terrain limit by up to two times; an increase in the maximum prop limit by up to 500; the addition of more than 200 assets that include a bog biome, goblin warlord, dragon and a single set of new primitive building blocks; the privilege of having 100 Upload Slots for each user's creations; the shift from using upvote/downvote ratings to favorites and downloads to determine UGC ranking; discontinuing of the Project Spark Marketplace and the Tour and Treasure Trove; and revamping of achievements for both creators and players.
"Microsoft Store credits will be awarded automatically to all users within 30 to 60 days after Oct. 5. If you have additional concerns, we have a full FAQ on our refund process," the post stated.
