A video game franchise about a line of assassins throughout history who fight a holy war for human freedom isn't exactly a topic that lends itself to a sense of fun.
Don't get us wrong. The Assassin's Creed games are usually fun to play, but it's rare that any of the characters in the game seem to be enjoying themselves. Usually, they're on a quest for vengeance or justice, powerfully driven to stop those Templars' dastardly schemes. So, there's precious few opportunities for levity or witty banter.
If this trailer is any indication, it looks like Assassin's Creed Syndicate may be striving for a different tone. It's still about deadly assassins undertaking an all-important quest, this time in London, but protagonists Jacob and Evie Frye come across unlike any other assassins we've seen before. They're charming gangsters who smile and speak with sparkling wit.
The trailer finds the duo running down their list of targets, Ocean's 11-style. They're a group of corrupt London businessmen and women who control various cogs in the Industrial Revolution machine. While they see their work as necessary, they clearly relish it. That gives everything a completely different vibe, a vibe that could equate to something that's much more fun than Assassin's Creed gamers are used to.
Maybe it's just the editing, but the dialogue seems crisper to our ears. Could this be one of the best-written games the franchise has ever released?
Assassin's Creed Syndicate arrives on Oct. 23, 2015 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
