Google has sent out invitations for a Sept. 29 event, where the company is expected to make announcements that include the unveiling of two new Nexus devices, the LG Nexus 5X and the Huawei Nexus 6P.
The two new Nexus devices will be the first ones to be running Google's new operating system, Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Rumors, however, are claiming one other specification that could have user clamoring to get their hands on one of the devices, the Huawei Nexus 6P.
Android news website Android Police reported that, according to multiple sources, the Huawei Nexus 6P will come in memory capacity options of 32GB, 64GB and up to 128GB. The 128GB option is an upgrade compared to the Motorola Nexus 6 that was released last year, which only offered up to 64GB worth of storage.
The rumored 128GB capacity of the Huawei Nexus 6P will likely be the maximum storage offered by the device, as it will likely not feature a microSD card slot for additional memory. Nexus devices have not featured a microSD card slot recently, and it does not look like the new Nexus devices will offering the feature.
The sources of Android Police, on the other hand, did not have any information regarding the storage options of the smaller LG Nexus 5X.
The 128GB option for the Huawei Nexus 6P and its starting memory capacity of 32GB shows the trend of device manufacturers moving away from offering 16GB as the lowest memory capacity for flagship devices and the expanding memory options. The Motorola-made Nexus 6 that was released last year had 32GB and 64GB options, and high-end devices being released this year are starting at 32GB capacities such as Samsung's Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note 5, the LG G4 and the HTC One M9.
The expanded capacities will allow users to include more apps, music, pictures and videos in their devices, and if users would need more memory but their devices have no microSD card slot, they can store their data in the cloud.
There will likely be a $50 to $100 price premium for every additional tier in memory capacities, with the exact price of the Huawei Nexus 6P as well as the LG Nexus 5X to be unveiled at Google's Sept. 29 event. Users looking forward to these devices should definitely start saving up now.
