T-Mobile is expanding its global coverage, adding 20 more countries to its Simple Global program that allows consumers to use their smartphones abroad for free.
With the 20 countries now added to the program, T-Mobile Simple Global spans over a total of 145 countries and areas around the world, including all countries in Europe and South America. T-Mobile's new global map covers 90 percent of the destinations Americans visit each year.
According to the Uncarrier, the most significant addition to the latest global coverage list is the Bahamas, where more than 2 million Americans travel each year. With T-Mobile, travelers no longer have to deal with add-on plans or staggering roaming charges, the carrier announced in a press release on Thursday, September 17.
Simple Global allows postpaid customers on T-Mobile's Simple Choice plans to enjoy unlimited low-speed data and texting for free outside of the U.S., as well as flat-rate calls that cost 20 cents per minute. It's worth pointing out that Simple Global delivers a standard data speed of 128 Kbps and tethering is not allowed.
T-Mobile boosts this offer with Mobile Without Borders, which allows customers to enjoy full talk, text and 4G LTE data in Mexico and Canada, free of charge.
T-Mobile bashed other carriers for increasing customer rates as soon as they go across the border, pointing the finger at one of its favorite bad examples: Verizon Wireless. The Uncarrier notes that traveling with Big Red's International Travel Preferred Pricing could slap customers with a whopping $250 for 1 GB of data, with the add-on included. With no add-on or in countries that don't qualify, Verizon could charge customers as much as $2.05 per megabyte, which would amount to an unbelievable $2,099.20 for 1 GB of data, T-Mobile explains.
"The carriers have made billions overcharging consumers who just want to stay connected overseas, and we've changed all that! Today, we made it even simpler to text, search or keep up on social media in a total of 145 countries and destinations, all at no extra cost," boasts John Legere, T-Mobile President and CEO.
The latest places to join the Simple Global program are Albania, Alderney, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Belarus, Bosnia, Georgia, Guernsey, Haiti, Isle of Man, Jersey, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lichtenstein, Macedonia, Monaco, Montenegro, Sark, Serbia and Slovenia.
