Sony and Olympus have announced that their joint venture, Sony Olympus Medical Solutions, Inc., will be releasing a 4K surgical endoscopy system, available for purchase starting in October 2015.
Olympus will sell the new system, which will be called the Visera 4K UHD. The new system, which has been in the works since 2013, will be available in both European and Japanese markets.
The device will essentially allow surgeons to more clearly see images of internal organs, which could be extremely helpful during surgery.
Sony contributed its expertise in 4K and digital imaging to the creation of the device. For the camera head, the company brought its 4K Exmor R CMOS image sensor, as well as miniaturization technology — making for extremely high image quality in a small package. Sony was also the lead in the development of the 4K medical recorder and the 4K medical monitors.
Olympus, for its part, has been developing technology for endoscopes for years now. The company's innovation benefitting the Visera 4K UHD can be seen in its ultra telescope, along with its 4K xenon light source.
Sony bought 11.5 percent of Olympus in 2012 — a much-needed move for Olympus after it suffered an accounting scandal that sent share prices down. Sony halved its stake in Olympus in April to help finance restructuring of the company, but has made clear that it hopes to continue working with the company.
