Sony gives the PlayStation 4 gaming console a colorful makeover with the release of nine new HDD base covers or faceplates which the company also matched with four new exciting colors for the controller.
At the recently concluded Tokyo Game Show annual press conference, Sony announced that the new console will come with swappable faceplates in nine exciting colors. These include black, white, silver, gold, hot pink, violet, neon, red and blue. Except for gold and silver, the seven remaining colors will be initially available at launch.
In December 2014, Sony hinted on the launching of swappable faces after it debuted Project Skylight beta.
"Customize your PS4 system with Project SkyLight Beta collectable faceplates. Made in special Limited Edition designs and available for just a short time, these faceplates are the best way to personalize your PS4 system," said PlayStation on its official page.
The faceplates revealed back then seemed to be more like game tie-ins with titles such as Bloodborne, LittleBigPlanet 3, and The Order: 1886 being made as design inspirations of the console. This time around, the new faceplates are geared more on displaying solid colors. With nine faceplates to mix and match, players can actually create up to 36 different matches, giving an illusion of having 36 unique consoles in one's possession.
Likewise, Sony also unveiled four new color options for the Dualshock 4. These include Silver, Gold, Steel Black and Transparent Crystal.
"A number of new Dualshock 4 Wireless Controller color variations are on their way, and I'm happy to confirm that the Gold and Silver editions will be available in SCEE territories," wrote Fred Dutton, SCEE Blog Manager, on PlayStation's blog post.
In other words, the aforementioned gold and silver colors of the faceplates will eventually launch in Europe.
The new colored faceplates in nine different hues will launch on Nov. 6 and will be priced at around $21. Players can get their hands on the swappable faceplates by visiting the Sony stores which shall be the exclusive retailer. The date is also picked as the same date when Sony will launch the new controllers although customers can only expect to see them in limited number of black, silver and gold. The transparent crystal model will reportedly launch on Dec. 3. The new Dualshock 4 pads will be priced at $54.
