It was Sept. 9, 1995 when PlayStation landed in North America. Twenty days later, Sept. 29, marked the day it launched in Europe. Over the decades since the launch, Sony has earned for itself the title of being a premier gaming company.
The success continued with the release of the PlayStation 4 which, according to business intelligence and research firm VGChartz, has sold 24.77 million units worldwide since its release in 2013. Such record makes it miles ahead its rivals, including the Xbox One which sold 13.57 million units and Wii U which sold 10.7 million.
"There was a lot of input from North America and Europe throughout during those early years, but Japan had made a lot of decisions based on that market," said John Koller, hardware marketing head at PlayStation. "They set the stage for what gaming would do globally. At a holistic level, PlayStation's legacy is taking gaming from the basement to the living room. We are called Sony Computer Entertainment for that reason."
