Japanese video game developer SNK Playmore announced at Sony's Tokyo Game Show press conference that a new title from The King of Fighters franchise will be released in 2016 for PlayStation 4.
Titled The King of Fighters XIV, the latest fighting game will feature brand-new 3D graphics.
"This brand-new KOF numbered series title features high-quality 3D visuals, however staying true to the gameplay roots of the series," SNK Playmore said.
While KOF XIV will feature full 3D graphics, it's not the first time the developer has used the quality visuals. Whereas 2D art is typically used in the series, the 2004 spinoff game The King of Fighters: Maximum Impact did feature some 3D graphics. The game was released for Taito Type X and PS2.
KOF XIV will ship in Japan on January 21, 2016. While it will be released for PS4, it is not yet known if it will remain exclusive to the console.
KOF first debuted in 1994, with the aptly titled The King of Fighters '94 game. The game was originally developed for SNK Playmore's arcade hardware, until it switched over to the Atomiswave arcade board in 2004.
