Perhaps one of the only things more lasting than diamonds in the James Bond franchise is its always-seminal array of theme songs. Today, Sony has announced who the next songster set to sing a newly-penned original theme song will be: none other than British crooner Sam Smith.
"This is one of the highlights of my career," said Smith in a press release issued by Sony.
Smith reportedly co-wrote the song, titled "Writing's on the Wall," with Jimmy Napes, who previously collaborated with Smith on the chart-topper "Stay With Me," considered one of Smith's most successful singles.
In the past, to be selected as a Bond artist has been one of unofficial prestige due to the rich history and makeup of past and well-known artists who have made songs like "Diamonds are Forever," "Goldfinger," "For Your Eyes Only" and the rest indelible and undeniable hallmarks in the history of cinema. Other notable theme song alumni include Shirley Bassey, Louis Armstrong, Paul McCartney (with Wings, not the Beatles), Jack White, Alicia Keys and Adele. The theme for the last Bond flick, "Skyfall," was the recipient of the 2013 Golden Globe and the Academy Award Best Original Song; the latter marked the first time a Bond song had won the honor.
"I am honored to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song," Smith continued, "I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it."
Here is the official synopsis for Daniel Craig's last Bond turn as the iconic, tuxedo-ed spy, which will mark his last appearance in the role:
"A cryptic message from the past sends James Bond (Daniel Craig) on a rogue mission to Mexico City and eventually Rome, where he meets Lucia Sciarra (Monica Bellucci), the beautiful and forbidden widow of an infamous criminal. Bond infiltrates a secret meeting and uncovers the existence of the sinister organization known as Spectre [...] As Bond ventures towards the heart of Spectre, he learns of a chilling connection between himself and the enemy he seeks, played by Christoph Waltz."
Spectre will hit U.S. theaters on November 5.
