Twitter Wants To Be More Diverse: At Least, That's The Plan

Workplace diversity is increasingly becoming more important for corporations and Twitter is now setting new goals towards this endeavor.

The company wants to make its workplace even more diverse and is now sharing a new strategy to outline the steps it aims to take in this direction.

Twitter started sharing ethnic and diversity information regarding its workplace last year and has increased its efforts in this regards in the meantime. The company already ran several programs and signed partnerships to boost its workforce diversity and it's now taking things to the next level to become even more diverse and inclusive.

"These new goals focus on increasing the overall representation of women and underrepresented minorities throughout the whole company," Twitter explains in a new announcement on its official blog.

For 2016, Twitter has set several goals to increase diversity, outlining its plans for women and unrepresented minorities in the U.S. The company to boost the women employees overall to 35 percent, women in technology roles to 16 percent and women in leadership positions to 25 percent. At the same time, Twitter is also shooting to boost unrepresented minorities overall to 11 percent, unrepresented minorities in technology roles to 9 percent, and unrepresented minorities in leadership roles to 6 percent.

The company will also continue with its efforts and partnerships to create opportunities for underrepresented minorities, recruit unrepresented talent at colleges and universities (Historically Black Colleges and Universities or Hispanic-Serving Institutions, for instance), improving its practices to attract more diverse candidates, and continue supporting women in tech.

Twitter has a wide and diverse user base, and wants this diversity to reflect in its work environment as well. The company is welcoming more categories and encouraging people to apply for jobs, as talented individuals are always a great asset.

An increasing number of companies are now making efforts to boost their workplace diversity and share their achievements in this area. Apple, for instance, lately shared the progress it made toward diversifying its workplace, significantly boosting the number of women it hired, as well as Black and Hispanic individuals or people from underrepresented minorities. Workplace diversity, inclusion and equality is a growing trend and such efforts are only expected to increase.
