LG's highly anticipated non-curved OLED 4K TVs are finally being released to the public, the company announced on Wednesday. LG showed off the TVs in January, and the line includes two models: one 55-inch and one 65-inch. Both TVs also come with HDR capabilities.
"Anyone who sees our newest TVs at this year's IFA will walk away without a shred of doubt that HDR and OLED complement each other perfectly," said Lee In-kyu, LG's senior vice president of the TV and monitor division, in a statement. "Our expanded 4K OLED TV lineup will demonstrate to consumers that OLED is here to stay and that LG is committed to leading the next generation TV market."
OLED TVs are largely regarded as the best that money can buy, because the colors are razor-sharp and extremely vibrant. While other technologies such as quantum-dot are gaining momentum, OLED TVs offer a better image quality, at least for now. Of course, none of this matters if no one can buy an OLED TV because of a lack of availability. Thankfully, LG is changing this.
For those who prefer the curved display, LG also announced a new 55-inch curved model, bringing the total number of OLED TVs offered by the company to nine. The curved TVs offer the same features as the flat screen TVs, apart from the obvious curvature.
The two TVs are also ultra-thin, with minuscule bezels. They are powered by the webOS 2.0 smart TV platform, and for audio, the TVs use Harman/Kardon speakers. LG says the two TVs will be available in the U.S. and Europe in September, with the 55-inch version costing $5,500 and the 65-inch version costing $7,000. Whereas they certainly aren't cheap, the price of OLED TVs is going down — LG's first OLED TV was $15,000 when it was launched a few years ago.
