Nintendo is planning something big with its NX console. The company stated that it is keeping everything close to its chest, but it appears something important might have just been leaked on the Web.
We're not certain if this piece of leaked information has anything to do with the NX console, but if such is the case, then Nintendo would be going down a dangerous, yet very exciting path.
According to the leaked information, Nintendo has patented a console that does not have an optical drive. Games would be stored on the hard disk drive or possibly an SD card. It is a console that appears as though it were designed entirely digitally, though we doubt Nintendo would do this.
Moving from disk to cartridges:
Nintendo's new console would have to be able to keep up with or even surpass both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. It means that the console must have a media format that can hold games 50 GB in size or more. Let's face it, the Mario factory will never use Blu-ray because it is awful for games.
Look at the amount of Xbox One and PlayStation 4 video games that need to be installed to a hard disk drive because the Blu-ray discs are too slow. We believe Nintendo might want to bypass this issue with its next console, and what better way to do it with a faster format such as a new type of SD card.
To make things even more interesting, Nintendo could be on the verge of something huge here. The ability to play handheld games on the NX would be a huge plus. If the company releases a new Game Boy handheld console, we could see it supporting to same media format, meaning it could be possible to buy a game for the handheld and play it on the NX.
Nothing to download, just plug and play all the way.
If the company truly goes down this path, then Microsoft and Sony would be in big trouble in the years to come. We'd likely see the rise of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One slims no sooner after Nintendo announces this console.
