In 2010, Guillermo del Toro announced he was working with THQ on a video game called Insane. Two years later, THQ went belly-up.
In mid-2014 del Toro announced he was working with Hideo Kojima on a new take on Silent Hill called Silent Hills, that would star The Walking Dead's Norman Reedus. Less than a year later, Kojima announced his departure from longtime development studio Konami, which caused Silent Hills to be canceled.
As a result, del Toro told Shacknews that he "will never again get involved in video games." It wasn't a decision made out of frustration as much as fear of what he might cause next.
"I have decided, in order not to destroy anyone else's life," said the director, "I will never again get involved in video games. Otherwise, I'll join someone and his house will explode, or something." Summing it up, he added, "If I join another video game, World War III will start."
Guillermo del Toro is the prolific director/writer/creator behind a wide range of projects, from Hellboy to FX's TV series The Strain, which is based on del Toro's own trilogy of novels. He won accolades for Pan's Labyrinth, launched a franchise with Pacific Rim, and co-wrote and very nearly directed The Hobbit. Most recently, he wrote and directed the gothic horror film Crimson Peak.
Although he may be done with hands-on video game development, del Toro said he's still entirely open to video games being made based on his film or TV properties. He also noted that his experiences with Kojima and THQ weren't entirely for nothing, as he "learned a lot" from both.
"It changed the way I see narrative," he concluded.
Del Toro's next project is Pacific Rim 2, also rumored to be called Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, which is expected in theaters in August of 2017.
