'Aquaman' Director James Wan Pegged To Produce 'Mortal Kombat' Movie

Not only is that Mortal Kombat movie reboot on again, but now the project has director James Wan attached to it.

However, Wan, known for his directing work on Aquaman, The Conjuring and Furious 7, won't direct Mortal Kombat, but instead, will serve as producer on the reboot of the 1995 film.

The studio hopes that Wan can bring life back to a stalled project by taking the Mortal Kombat film in a different direction, which the studio describes as "a departure from the mythology" of Mortal Kombat with "darker, brutally real martial arts."

The Mortal Kombat video game franchise earned notoriety in the 1990s due to its high levels of bloody violence, particularly with its finishing moves called Fatalities. These moves were so violent and controversial that the game ushered in a new era of gaming that resulted in the creation of the ESRB video game rating system with Mortal Kombat being the first video game in history to receive a mature rating.

The Mortal Kombat franchise remains popular with fans of fighting games, with the latest title, Mortal Kombat X released earlier this year. The revival of the rebooted movie comes at a time when the game is as popular as ever, so it's likely that by tagging Wan to produce the movie, the studio hopes to strike while the iron is hot. With Wan having served behind the helm of Furious 7, one of the top five highest grossing movies of all time, it seems that the studio feels he is the right man for the job.

The Mortal Kombat film gets a script written by Mortal Kombat: Legacy writer Oren Uziel and The Expendables writer Dave Callaham. The story revolves around a man who realizes his power when he gets caught in a battle between the monsters of Outworld and the fighters on Earth. To save the world, he must win Mortal Kombat, the ultimate martial arts tournament.

It seems that Mortal Kombat producer Wan is a busy man: he also recently signed on to direct a live action Robotech movie for Sony.
