20th Century Fox's Deadpool is set to take moviegoers to a corner of the Marvel universe not seen since the Blade movies. It's an end of the Marvel spectrum where hardcore violence, buckets of splattered blood and f-bombs are the norm.
Ryan Reynolds stars as the famous Merc With a Mouth, a Special Forces operative who's subjected to a horrific experiment that nearly destroys his life, but leaves him with accelerated healing powers (yes, just like Wolverine). He puts his already deadly skills to use like never before, as a masked vigilante seemingly immune to pain.
But it's his dark, twisted sense of humor that becomes his defining trait. Did the experiments drive him insane? Crazy or not, he sets out to hunt down those responsible for what was done to him. And he's very, very good at it.
Fox has finally released the movie's first trailer, and it's precisely what fans are hoping for. Vulgar and hilarious, with cool, stylized action setpieces. Deadpool is, in Marvel Comics, a mutant, though he rarely appears alongside the X-Men. Watch the trailer closely and you'll glimpse one mutant's familiar face: Colossus. Another, a more obscure mutant with the improbable name Negasonic Teenage Warhead, makes her film debut.
As for Deadpool, his first movie appearance was in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which also starred Ryan Reynolds in the role. But fans were unhappy with how the character was handled in that film, so that version of Deadpool has been scrapped in favor of one more faithful to the comics.
Does it even need saying that this red band trailer is NSFW? If you prefer a more PG version of the trailer, a sanitized version can be viewed here.
Deadpool will be in theaters on February 12, 2016.
