Horizon: Zero Dawn has it all. Bows and arrows. Gigantic robot dinosaurs. And a strong, female lead character.
We don't know much about the game beyond that, but the latest issue of Official PlayStation Magazine looks to change that, revealing new details about the PlayStation 4 exclusive, including some of the inspirations for Aloy, the game's protaganist.
"We felt we had quite an original composition and combination of elements with the robots and the nature, so we also felt like it needed an original and strong character to go with that," says game director Mathijs de Jonge. "One of the directions we were very interested in was a character like Sarah Connor in Terminator, Ripley in Alien or, more recently, Ygritte from Game Of Thrones; very strong female characters. That's where we started."
It seems the game wears Aloy's inspirations on its sleeve. With her red hair and deadly efficiency with a bow and arrow, Aloy shares more than a few similarities with the firey wildling from Game of Thrones. Outside of sharing the same hair color, the two character's are also hunter-gatherers, but while Ygritte is out hunting Crows and wildlife beyond the Wall, Aloy tackles much bigger prey, like the fearsome Thunderjaw robot we saw in the game's announcement trailer.
Just in case you forgot what Ygritte looks like:
And here is Horizon: Zero Dawn's Aloy:
Without having seen more of the game it's hard to say exactly how closely Aloy will pull from Ripley, Sarah Connor or Ygritte, but it's important to keep in mind that game director Mathijs de Jonge said those strong female characters were only a starting point. Only when developer Guerilla Games begins to reveal more of the robot-dinosaur filled world they've created will players be able to see the character Aloy evolved into.
Let's just hope Aloy is with us a bit longer than Jon Snow's long lost love.
