"FLAME ON!" Two new official trailers for the Fantastic Four reboot have been released.
Both trailers – one domestic, one international – delve into the backstory of the friendship between Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) and Ben Grimm (Thing). Both characters are depicted as alienated tweens — in the case of Reed, a child prodigy with a penchant for teleportation, and in the case of Ben, a loner protective of his best friend. This particular narrative take is in line with the plot of the Ultimate Fantastic Four comics series, on which the film is supposedly based.
While the film looks a lot more promising than the recent (and critically dismissed) Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), the sole attention and focus granted to Reed and Ben is somewhat disappointing. Sue and Johnny's origins remain a bit more murky, with less character screen time.
If you're going to make two trailers, why not have one be devoted to the story of Invisible Woman and Human Torch, rather than releasing duplicate teasers that are all-Thing and all-Mr. Fantastic all the time? Sigh.
The new Fantastic Four film, a contemporary take on Marvel's longest-running superhero squad, stars Michael B. Jordan (Human Torch), Kate Mara (Invisible Woman), Miles Teller (Mr. Fantastic) and Jamie Bell (Thing), with Josh Trank as director. Fantastic Four will be Trank's second film.
